What IS a Subcon Forest?

subconbig

Hello hello!

This month we are focusing on getting the Subcon Forest up to the scale and performance that we want! If you have been following us closely, you can see that the Subcon Forest has changed drastically! Oh my!

The Subcon Forest is the second chapter of A Hat in Time, and quite purposefully so. We want each chapter to be very distinct and in contrast to the rest, and we figured that a gloom, dark forest would be the perfect contrast for the uplifting and energetic Mafia Town.

The forest is a no man’s land, and as a result we have forces fighting to take control of it all. The Moonjumper, a mysterious and fine gentleman invites you to the forest – a place he considers soon to be his domain! The Snatcher, a sneaky shadow who grabs people and their belongings to hide them where they are never to be found! And Queen Vanessa… the less said about the Queen the better – just beware of those cute little eyes of hers!

The forest isn’t a place for ordinary people. Instead, it is populated by the Forest Dwellers, flying gooey spirits who hide behind various masks. They claim to once have been living creatures! “Hah!” says the Moonjumper, “clearly they are just pretending!”.

So what is the Subcon Forest anyways? Well it would ruin the fun to tell you right away, wouldn’t it? I think it’d be best for you to figure out on your own.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say it has something to do with sleep. Mario 2’s world is Subcon, and spoilers, that’s a dream world!

Some antialiasing would be welcome :) Otherwise it looks great.

I don’t usually have it on when I run the game, which is a bit unfortunate for screenshots. I will make sure to have it on for the future 😀

Something I find interesting is how the Subcon Forest thusfar look a lot more “flat” than Mafia Town did. This suggests to me either that the level will have a different focus–perhaps more adventure-y than platform-y–or that its more platformery aspects will be hidden, such as in secrets like the ones shown off in the press demo, or maybe there’ll even be a secret canopy to the forest! …Or something. Either way, I think this might end up my favorite level, but we will see!

Hum… I currently prefer how it used to look in previouses pictures/trailers, but as said on the picture, I guess it’s far from finished!

Looking great! :-) I agree about the anti aliasing-that should be addressed and refined as the development of the game gets further along.-

I am very excited to see the progression and the result of the team’s labors.

Alpha can’t come soon enough! Great job guys…

It looks great! It really reminds me of the forest from “The Path”, the game based on Red Riding Hood where you play as several girls on their way to grandma’s house. So visually it’s sort of a Path/Windwaker crossover. I am particularly fond of the wisps of light that hover around in the air and creates an ethereal atmosphere overall.

What worries me is that it looks like there will be a lot of just running from place to place with little platforming. Is there any chance that you will receive some sort of vehicle that will help you get from one place to another faster? Maybe a forest animal you can ride or something in the spirit of the rockets on Mafia Island?

I also really hope that you kept in the colorful town of the Forest Dwellers. It is great that you are going for a contrast between levels, but I think it is equally important that you seek for contrast in the levels themselves.
